Islamic New Year

1 Muharram 1449 AH — begin with reflection and giving

What is the Islamic New Year?

The Islamic New Year begins on 1 Muharram, the first day of the Hijri calendar. Unlike cultural new-year festivities, Muslims welcome it with quiet reflection, gratitude, and renewed intention for worship and service.

It commemorates the Hijra — the migration of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Makkah to Madinah — which became Year One of Islamic history. Each new year is a chance to reset priorities: prayer, family, justice, and charity.

Expected date for 1 Muharram 1449 AH: Sunday, June 6, 2027 (civil calendar estimate; confirm with local moon sighting).

Start the year with Sadaqah or Zakat through Roshan Foundation — food, orphan care, clean water, and emergency relief for families who need hope now.

The Hijra — A Journey That Changed History

When persecution in Makkah grew severe, Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ to migrate to Madinah. That journey built the first Muslim community founded on faith, brotherhood, and care for the vulnerable — values that still guide humanitarian work today.

“If you do not aid the Prophet — Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out… while he said to his companion, ‘Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.’” — Qur’an 9:40
Month of worship

A Month of Elevated Worship

Muharram is one of the four sacred months. Good deeds carry special weight, and believers are urged to avoid wrongdoing, increase Qur’an and dhikr, and give generously.

The first ten days lead toward Ashura — a day of fasting and remembrance. Begin the year by sponsoring an orphan, funding a food pack, or supporting flood-affected families.

“The best fasting after Ramadan is in the month of Allah, Al-Muharram.” — Ibn Majah

The History of the Hijri Calendar

Why Was the Hijri Chosen as Year One?

Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) established the Hijra as the starting point of the Islamic calendar so that Muslim life — worship, contracts, and community — would be dated from the founding of the Madinan community rather than from kings or battles alone.

The Lunar Calendar and Its Phases

Each Hijri month begins with the crescent moon. A year is about 354 days, so sacred seasons move through the Gregorian year. Use our Islamic Calendar to track Muharram, Ramadan, and Eid dates as you plan your giving.
